The visible part of iceberg is really just a tiny, tiny part of the whole. The largest part of the iceberg lies beneath the surface, where onlookers cannot see it. Just a glance at that small piece of ice bobbing atop the waves tells you nothing about the shape of the larger iceberg beneath, it's just a small and somewhat insignificant piece of a much more substantial entity.
The same is true for many who visit the Gender Disappointment board. The part of themselves that they share here on this board is only a miniscule fragment of an entire person. Very likely, it's the saddest, angriest, most bitter fragment, and it's a part of themselves that they can share nowhere else. So those dark feelings are given voice and the things they say may shock and frighten people. Underneath the water, in real life, the whole person is wonderful, vibrant, brilliant, and lovely. But by looking only at the tip of the iceberg, one would never realize that.
We should not judge anyone as a person based on what they say on the Gender Disappointment board. People come here because they know that the things they are thinking and feeling are painful and not healthy for them, and they want help. This is supposed to be a safe place to vent our feelings, because feelings not expressed fester and spread, and they have a way of poisoning a person's entire being. We are here to love and support one another, not to tear each other down. There are enough people in the world already who are eager to criticize and judge us for feelings that we never asked for. If you feel that you cannot be supportive of someone, if it goes against your morals to do so, no one is asking that you be. Simply say nothing and move on, there are plenty of people in need of support.
