I didn't mean to sound rude I was just thinking I have a hard enough time doing laundry for my family of 5 soon to be 6 let alone a new born with dirty diapers. I just think it sounds really nice & is best for the enviro, baby but I need to be realistic...my friend lives in OR with a diaper service I would totally do it..

katrun: I was just thinking I have a hard enough time doing laundry for my family of 5 soon to be 6 Oh, don't let the laundry part scare you! It really isn't a big deal at all. It's 2-3 extra loads a week. It's actually my favorite laundry to do. And I really think that it's way easier to throw in a load of dirty diapers than it is to get the kids ready, load everyone up in the car, drive to the store, unload the kids, and go in to buy a package of diapers. My main motivation, besides the health of my baby, was to save money, and I definitely have! Diaper services are generally pretty expensive. You could do it yourself for a lot less.

Diddo- so much easier to throw them in the wash (and unlike other clothes, you just toss the entire dirty stash in without touching it! I dump it out of my pail liner and then throw the pail liner in too) then worry about getting to the store and spending 40$ on diapers and wipes every time we go shopping and then freaking out about not having diapers soon enough and trying to get DH to pick some up when I have only 1-2 diapers until he gets home from work. Ew! Plus it's fun seeing all the colorful covers hanging up. I do clothes laundry every 2 days (2 loads every other day) and washing the diapers doesn't feel like anything more then what I've already got to do. There's some really good threads going on here in the last couple days if you want to read through them, and then what ever other questions you have- I'd be happy to answer!

I don't have experience with tons of different ones (give me a few months ) but I have Flips with trifolded prefolds and a preemie prefold folded in the crotch area for extra absorbancy. I like the Flips.

I totally understand. That's why I've never tried it yet- because if I'm too overwhelmed with just everyday life, I'm not going to add something else on top of it. I'm just now going to start it (my diapers arrive tomorrow!), and my youngest is 14 months. Maybe you could slowly buy a few, then start trying it once you've had the baby and things have settled down.

I agree - just start slowly - no need to commit at the beginning. If you decide it's not for you, you can easily sell the diapers - there's a big market for used diapers, especially gently used ones. When I started, I thought I'd just do it part time. I started with 3 diapers to see what I thought. As soon as I tried them, I got hooked. Now, 7 months later, my ds is in cloth 24 hours a day and I have a stash big enough to last me 4 days (though I tend to wash every 2-3 days). I agree that diaper laundry is my favourite and easiest laundry to do - I have 3 boys 4 and under, so I do a LOT of laundry too - all the diapers add is about 3 extra loads per week, which is nothing in the grand scheme of things. As for good diapers to start with, it depends on whether cost or convenience is more important to you. The cheapest option are prefolds with covers. Lots of mamas love diapering this way, either by using a snappi (the modern version of a diaper pin) to put the prefold on the baby, or just folding it in 3 and placing it in the cover. I do this with my Booroi covers all the time. If you want convenience, pocket diapers or all-in-ones may be the way to go. These ones go on most like disposable diapers - especially the velcro ones. BumGenius is one of the more popular pocket diapers, but I also like Knickernappies. There are also all-in-two systems, like Grobaby, which are very economical and easy to use - check out another thread here all about them.

katrun:what is your favorite kind? I have really only used pocket diapers, and I love them! Easy to use, wash, etc. I have tried out some other kinds (prefolds and cover, fitteds) that were loaned to me by a friend, and I am getting ready to buy some Flips.
